July 4, 2017

Now that Venom Inc.’s current trio is about to release this year’s Avé (August 11th on Nuclear Blast), we had the opportunity to celebrate (and anticipate) the upcoming full-length with our Flexi Series. This month (Issue #154, August 2017, Suffocation cover), Decibel brings you a demo version of “Dein Fleisch,” a song that will appear in album form on Avé. While you cruise through the song’s effortless evil, check out bassist/vocalist “Demolition Man” Tony Dolan’s responses to our inquiries about the song’s origins and creation.

Mechanical Ghosts & Bunker Air, A Q&A Valborg’s Christian Kolf

July 3, 2017

There are musical surprises. And then there are musical surprises. Valborg aren’t an easy band to peg. The band from Bonn, Germany have tried the patience of categorization from their inception in 2002. Valborg’s debut album, Glorification of Pain, continues to stupefy, confound, and amaze. That was eight years ago. Since Glorification of Pain, the Germans have made five more stunning, left-of-center albums, the latest of which is the brutal brain scratcher, Endstrand.

Unmasked But Not Demystified, A Q&A With Farsot’s III.XXIII & X.XIX

June 12, 2017

The last time we talked to Farsot, bassist/keyboardist v.03/170 was fielding our inquiries into the band’s inner workings. The Germans had just released their second album, 2011’s stupendous Insects, and we here at Decibel were obsessed with what made the landmark effort tick. Now, seven years later, we inquire about album of the year contender (my opinion, natch) in Fail-Lure.

Montreal’s MUTANK – all caps, all the time, I’ve been warned – is a crossover/thrash whose members not only love crossover thrash, but acronyms and plays on words using their moniker as the jumping off point. We’ve been hitting Soft Kill‘s newest album, Choke, hard for almost six months now. When Choke smashed into winter 2016, it immediately reminded of UK legends The Chameleons (Script of the Bridge is a genuine deserted island-type record), French mopers Asylum Party (whose Borderline album is a must-hear), and Belgian treasure obscure The Names, whose single “Nightshift” went on to inspire contemporary pop-prog outfit like Mew.
