When doom/post-metal group Giant Squid broke up, its members were far from over. Four fifths of the band set their sets on their next musical endeavor, Squalus.
“We had new stories to tell, new musical energies to exercise, new depths to explore and new beasts to confront,” Squalus bassist/vocalist Aaron John Gregory says.
The Great Fish…, the debut from Squalus, will be released through Translation Loss Records, the same label Giant Squid released their last album through.
On The Great Fish, Squalus elect not to use guitars, instead playing with two basses, keys, drums and vocals. The nautical theme runs throughout Squalus into the lyrics and message behind the music.
“The ocean will always win, whether it be by sinking our ships with storms, or by pulling us in to its food chain and swallowing us whole,” Gregory says. “Masculine arrogance, ego, and spite always fails when faced with the sheer power of the sea. And yet, man doesn’t stop trying to conquer it or slay it; knowing damn well the end result will always be his own peril.”
Squalus The Great Fish… recorded with Tim Green (Wolves in the Throne Room, Melvins, Giant Squid). It avoids easy classification, but you can hear the album’s first single, “The Orca” now. Once you listen, you can find more info about the album on Translation Loss’ website.
