Five For Friday: December 8, 2023

Greetings, Decibel listeners!

Hope you’re all as excited as I am about next year’s Decibel Magazine Tour! Anyone who’s followed this column consistently knows I’m a giant Hulder fanboy and am probably somewhat responsible for the amount of hype she’s gotten over the last few years. All of it totally deserved. But don’t forget about Devil Master as well! Last time I saw them was when they opened for Emperor. They did a fine job, but they are very much an act meant for smaller venues.

As for the music below, it’s definitely meant for cold, grim winter days, and sleepless, horrified nights!

Dimmu Borgir – Inspiratio Profanus

One of black metal’s ultimate crossover success stories returns with an album of devotional covers. The “Nocturnal Fear” cover is particularly ferocious, so pay special attention that one.

Dusk – Dissolve Into Ash

Yes, THAT Dusk. The …Majestic Thou in Ruin Dusk. This actually comes out on Monday, December 18, but the source I use to track new releases had it earmarked for today. Regardless, check out the song below and nail this album to your calendars.

Dwelling Below – Dwelling Below

Death-doom that is just as nightmare inducing as its album cover. Imagine taking the atmosphere of bands like Evoken and Mournful Congregation, and then adding the dissonant harshness of bands like Gorguts and Ulcerate.

Fugitive Wizard – Ultima Magus Chapter IV

The raw black metal posting will continue until morale improves!!! And by that I mean never. I hope Fugitive Wizard releases a massive compendium of these one day, because I can’t get enough of this.

Phobocosm – Foreordained

Fresh off their performance at this year’s Denver edition of Decibel Metal and Beer Fest, Phobocosm is ready to deliver its latest salvo of sonic terror. By the way, if you like you hear, you might want to snatch up a limited edition Decibel-exclusive vinyl version.
