Track Premiere: Destroyer of Light – ‘Lullaby’ (The Cure Cover)

Nearly a decade into their career, doom faction Destroyer of Light are showing off a different side of themselves. The Austin quartet will follow up last year’s Mors Aeterna EP with a two-song EP entitled Generational Warfare, featuring a cover of The Cure’s “Lullaby” on the A-side.

Decibel has teamed up with Destroyer of Light to make sure your Valentine’s Day is just a little extra morbid (don’t say we never gave you anything!) by streaming the entirety of the doomed-out rendition below. Unsurprisingly, Destroyer of Light put a dramatically-heavier spin on “Lullaby,” adapting it for massive guitars, booming percussion and guitarist/vocalist Steve Colca’s distressed vocals.

Destroyer of Light’s vision for “Lullaby” matches the morbid lyrics, which center around depression and abuse.

“For years, I’ve wanted to cover a The Cure song,” Colca explains. “Not only am I huge fan, but I always thought that they had some songs that could easily be constructed into a doom song. I think a lot of people don’t realize how heavy The Cure’s music is, especially if you’ve seen or heard them live. We all agreed that ‘Lullaby’ was the perfect choice. The lyrics are super dark and when we started working on it, it just fell into place.”

Check it out below; Destroyer of Light will release Generational Warfare on March 27 via Heavy Friends.
