Track Premiere: War Orphan – “Heavy Weighs the Crown”

Let’s shake things up with a Shakespeare-quoting hardcore quartet from Yonkers, New York. War Orphan features a former Sick of it All member (Richie Cipriano), as well as former members of post-hardcore band Reach. Formed in 2020, these scene vets—David Bason (vocals), Richie Cipriano (guitar), Dante Renzi (drums), Danny Martinez (bass)—have gone old school with their take on hardcore, giving a nod to the SoCal sound on their Black Flag-leaning new single, “Heavy Weighs the Crown.”

The track is a lurching pounder with Bason raging with the fury of Henry Rollins while conveying a motivating, positive message. Imagine Loose Nut-era Black Flag with a New York accent, so to speak. “Heavy Weighs the Crown” is set for release on July 29 and is the latest single from War Orphan’s upcoming Unite full-length which is due in late summer 2022 on Stay Gold Records. In the meantime, “Heavy Weighs” will be available on both Apple Music and Spotify.

Here’s what the band had to say about their latest single:

“We butchered a perfectly good Shakespeare quote for this one. You’ve come this far kid, keep pushing, don’t get comfortable, keep working hard. Once you achieve any part of your dream there is a temptation to stop and look at what you’ve accomplished. That is a trap and leads to complacency. Leave your achievements in the past. Keep pushing. You must keep chasing your dreams. Something or someone will always stand in the way, but you must keep pushing. Look forward, not back.”
