Five For Friday: October 16, 2026

Greetings, Decibel readers!

There’s a lot to love here for Decibel readers, as we’ve got a lot of death metal on the docket. Swedish-style death metal, blackened death metal, and some doomy death metal too. But we’ve also got some unique and experimental fare to offer as well, with the latest from a post-rock giant and some high-quality psych-rock too.

Carnation – Symphony In Flesh

Dismember-worship at its very best! Belgium’s Carnation emulates the classic HM-2 sound but also takes care to infuse melodies that keep the listener engaged and craving more. The tried-and-true never get old so long as the songwriting is good. And it’s really good here.

Caspian – Caspian

The latest from one of the greatest in modern post-rock. Somehow, you know exactly what to expect from a band like Caspian but they still manage to catch you by surprise. For some reason when I listen to the moving and evocative songs on this record, there’s an overwhelming feeling it sends me: “It’s going to be alright.”

Firebreather – Blood That I Spill Turns to Fire

I hope you like riffs! When it comes to trippy, psych-influenced rock and metal, this is very much my jam. I can’t get over the band’s guitar tone here. So powerful and electric, and yet so clear! Think of the vibe of Electric Wizard but with the songwriting approach of early Mastodon.

Morgue – Herald the Dawn

Solid, no-nonsense death metal. Like if Vader did a collaboration with Bloodbath, specifically the iteration with Nick Holmes on vocals — but also added some ever-so-subtle black metal elements as well. You can even catch a bluesy-pentatonic guitar lick here and there. Maybe these guys are into early Unanimated. Whatever the case, this is one mean, dark, excellent record.

Worm Altar – Pillars of Eternal Dusk

Meanwhile, if you want your death metal to have a little more doom mixed in, you’ve come to the right place with Worm Altar. This is one of those records that makes you just throw the horns up when you hear those low, guttural vocals kick in. You’ll probably make that ugly face when you hear the riffs as well. That’s how you know it’s good.
