Indiana melodic death/thrash grave-burners Death on Fire formed in 2016. Over the past five years, the band has expanded their blend of Gothenburg melodeath with a dirtier breed of US thrash metal. But they’re not content to just stomp Hoosier stages. They’re touring before the release of their upcoming 2022 LP, Burial Hymns. Today we have a preview of the album with one of their throttling stand-out tracks, “Slave.”
The mournful blues of the song’s opening quickly surrenders to melodic thrashing with barbaric bellows. The composition’s movements each double-down on intensity until about 100 seconds in. After that, the song shines a spotlight on the lead guitars. The solos sizzle and shine against the smoky, dark metal soundscape. But they’re not manufactured opportunities to show off technical shred skills. The solos pack so much emotion evident from the song’s themes into a melancholic expression of rage.
“[This song] deals with the struggles of depression, addiction, and self hate,” shares founding vocalist/guitarist Tim Kenefic. “It is a hard look back at life and a reminder of the decisions we face and the impacts they have on others.”
