Nashville’s Yautja is one of those bands that are impossible to pin down. The Tennessee trio effortlessly fuses extreme metal, punk, and noise into such a unique brand of music. The band makes their Relapse Records debut with their second full-length album, The Lurch. Seven years (and a handful of singles and splits) following Songs of Descent, The Lurch showcases an already exceptional band at a grander, more diverse peak.
That sentiment is largely apparent in their newest single, “The Spectacle.” The track stomps between a seizing crawl and a furious death metal blast. The track seems to hang just off its axis, never quite settling into one rhythm more than the other. It masterfully reflects Yautja‘s unease and unsettled views of the world at large—be they sociopolitical, technological, or personal.
Though members of Yautja could not be reached for comment on the new song, Inter Arma vocalist, Mike Paparo, provided his thoughts stating, “The Spectacle, huh? I think the real spectacle here is that these three extraterrestrial life forms came together to create such alien but still undeniably organic and human music. A group that’s truly from some other world. Visit it. It’s worth the journey.”
