Five For Friday: March 19, 2021

Hello Decibel readers!

Spring is almost upon us. It’s been a long, cold, lonely winter for a lot of people. But perhaps as the weather brightens up, vaccines get widely distributed and people’s prospects improve, it’ll seem like years since it’s been here. But no matter the weather, Decibel is here to provide you with the latest in solid riffs. This week’s green shoots will be particularly welcome for fans of progressive metal, thrash, brutal death metal and black metal that talks about space.

Enjoy!

DVNE – Etemen Ænka

For those of you who are all about post-metal and like it with touches of desert rock and psychedelia. The band’s sound follows very much in the tradition of Mastodon, Baroness, and The Ocean in its tone, attitude and dramatic feel. Deep, meaty, muscular stuff.

Enforced – Kill Grid

You know all those nice things I said about Steel Bearing Hand the other day regarding thrash metal in 2021? That applies to these metal masterminds as well. This absolutely rules. Nothing is out of place. The vocals are brutal. The breakdowns totally slay, and the solos will tear the paint from the walls. Dare I say thrash is making a substantive comeback? Something I didn’t think possible after the absolute hangover of the neo-thrash scene of 10 years ago.

Feculent – The Grotesque Arena

Mare Cognitum – Solar Paroxysm

In a crowded field of bands who really like to talk about planets and stuff, Mare Cognitum remains of the best composers of cosmic darkness. On the project’s latest release, Mare Cognitum turns inward at the frustrations of humanity, and uses the natural themes as an expressive muse. The results are as captivating as ever.

Ulthima – Symphony of the Night

Upon examination, this album doesn’t appear to be inspired by Castlevania. But upon further examination, the album is a lot of epic, symphonic fun, so who cares? For fans of Children of Bodom and later Dark Tranquility, this album should be essential listening.
