When Decibel last checked in with Colorado sludge punks Call of the Void, the members of the band were still adjusting to a new lineup for their AYFKM EP, which was released via Translation Loss in late 2016. Following that, Call of the Void hit the road with Decibel cover stars Pig Destroyer and Power Trip (on separate occasions), as well as Trap Them, to hone their chops.
In the time since, Call of the Void recorded new LP Buried in Light, their strongest, darkest and most-varied work to date, for a May release on Translation Loss. The record’s first single, “Living Ruins,” underscores Call of the Void’s ability to jump from rousing punk to groovy sludge.
“This is a concept record on what drives people to walk away from everything, to blind servitude, isolation and suicide in a seemingly ‘perfect’ world,” drummer Gordon Koch explains to Decibel. “Vignettes into the events that push you over the edge and push you away from society as a whole. We are speaking from the heart, from personal experiences, the study of modern apocalypse cults and the people affected by them.”
