Watch: Mortiis – ‘Visions of an Ancient Future’

Mortiis, the godfather of dungeon synth, is preparing to embark on a tour performing his Era I music (for an in-depth Era I primer, see Neill Jameson’s interview with Mortiis) and with that comes new music, his first in the Era I style since the ’90s. Fortunately, he hasn’t lost a bit of his unique sound or style in that time, as evidenced with the video for “Visions of an Ancient Future,” which hails from his forthcoming Spirit of Rebellion album.

“Visions of an Ancient Future” ( a re-recording of a song from 1994’s Ånden som Gjorde Opprør) is the perfect soundtrack to its accompanying visual, which plays out more like a short film than a typical music video. Mortiis is portrayed as a dark and evil being who revels in his power at the end of the bloody video.

“I had to fend off a lot of demons to get to this point,” Mortiis explains bluntly. “They’ll be back, they always come back, but at least my vision is no longer clouded… When I was working on re-interpreting my old music for the Cold Meat Industry festival in Stockholm a little over a year ago, I had no idea that I’d eventually create an (almost) new record, nor that a section of it would be used for my first dungeon synth video since 1996. But here we are. New video and (almost) new music, and my first Era 1 US tour since 1999.”
