Brewtal Truth: Hydra Brews Urban Legend Coffee Stout With Dave Ellefson Coffee

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has his A Tout Le Monde Dry Hopped Saison brewed by Canada’s Unibroue and now the other Dave in Megadeth, bassist Dave Ellefson, has a beer brewed with his Ellefson Coffee Co. coffee. Urban Legend Coffee Stout was brewed by South Dakota’s Hydra Beer Company using Ellefson’s Urban Legend coffee. The beer was launched last weekend at Hydra in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Ellefson showed up for a meet and greet and former Keel frontman and Sioux Falls resident Ron Keel performed with his band.

Ellefson’s not an imbiber himself these days (he’s been sober for 30 years), but his coffee has been used in other alcoholic beverages—both wine and cider—in addition to the coffee stout brewed by Hydra. The brewery approached Ellefson in late 2017 to do a collab and the bassist saw it as a great fit for his burgeoning line of coffee roasts and blends with names like, Roast in Peace, Kenya Thrash, She Wolf and, of course, Urban Legend.

Unfortunately, Hydra’s Urban Legend Coffee Stout isn’t commercially available at this point, but Ellefson’s coffee can be ordered through his website.
