Welcome to Demo:listen, your weekly peek into the future of underground metal. Whether it’s death, grind, black, doom, sludge, heavy, progressive, stoner, retro, post-, etc. we’re here to bring you the latest demos from the newest bands. On this week’s Demo:listen, we invade your day with an exclusive premiere of the demo, Souls for the Legions, by Portugal’s FlaktiiN.
From a country that’s lately known for its haunted, lo-fi black metal comes FlaktiiN, a war-themed black’n’doomy death metal band that’s sure to appeal to your inner-despot. Although even beyond the borders of Portugal, FlaktiiN (whose name is derived from the Flak 18 anti-aircraft weaponry used in WWII) are an anomaly. We could spend all day worrying over FlaktiiN’s taxonomy, but then we’d miss the point. When a nation engages in total war, it uses every branch of its military. As for FlaktiiN’s war-inspired demo, then, it’s no surprise that nearly every subgenre of extreme metal has been employed to its fullest capacity. Says Belial Necro, the band’s founder, chief songwriter, guitarist andvocalist: “We all love and dig death, black, doom, old school stuff . . . so it’s natural for me to create an angry atmospheric metal mood.”
FlaktiiN began as a solo project of Necro’s before he recruited three of his friends—FALKATVS MO☈S on drums, Razamod on bass, and Blaspherius on second guitar—in order to take FlaktiiN out into the unsuspecting world. “For about one month, I was composing and recording everything by myself, and later FALKATVS MO☈S assisted me with recording the vocals,” says Necro. “When I started to plan the live show I contacted a couple of other childhood friends to fill the roles of bass and guitar [players].” Necro is lucky to have such talented and willing friends. Because the five songs on Souls for the Legions likely require not only a strong musical ability to play, and to play well, but to wield such vitriol is surely no easy task either.
Currently FlaktiiN are working hard on getting their setlist down for live performances/imminent global takeover. Before then you’d better check out this exclusive premiere of FlaktiiN’s six track demo Souls for the Legions out on tape November 15th from War Arts Productions.
