It’s been a big year for New Jersey’s Cognitive. The technical death metal band played shows with the likes of Decapitated, completed a full US tour in June, then announced a signing and new album with Unique Leader Records. Deformity will be out in late October, but the first taste is here to crush you now.
“Birthing the Deformity” is every bit as heavy as it sounds; technical guitar riffs and guttural vocals rip side by side with a bludgeoning rhythm section for big results. There’s even a solo and a mosh part that’s even heavier. Business as usual for Cognitive, a band that formed with the intention of writing intensely technical, heavy music.
Some slick visuals added in with live footage of Cognitive ripping through “Birthing the Deformity” in an eery looking forest make up the live video. The red flashes are definitely a fitting companion to the brutality being unleashed here.
“‘Birthing The Deformity’ describes the nightmare that is the beginning of existence for The Great and Terrible Horror that dwells in vast and desolate barrens. We agreed that the best way for us to portray the abominable actions that may have taken place that night was to film in the fabled forest itself,” says Jorel Hart, Cognitive’s vocalist.
Cognitive will unleash Deformity on October 28 through Unique Leader. You can get your preorder in now, though.
