The Grindmother, the first grindcore band fronted by—to our knowledge—someone’s grandmother, burst onto the scene last year. OK, they put a a few YouTube videos that were completely endearing and surprisingly musically competent.
Today, the Canadian act returns minus the grind, but with the mother intact via a cover of Sepultura’s 1993 bruiser “Slave New World.”
“Admittedly, I don’t know a lot of heavy music, but when I heard this song I fell in love with it,” the 67 year-old Grindmother herself tells Decibel. “So when Rain [guitar] and Tyson [Apex, drums] proposed we record our own version of it, I was all for it and immediately learned it off by heart. They are both huge fans of classic Sepultura and I would now consider myself a fan as well. Although they tell me it’s not grindcore, I can certainly hear the influence in many of our own songs.”
The song was recorded during the sessions for Grindmother’s debut album Age of Destruction, which was released on CD and digitally earlier this year. A limited edition 12″ version of the recording will be released later this year via Fear Me Music.
