Following its 2022 release, Earthtorn, New Jersey-based doom metal project Drift Into Black returns with its fifth full-length album, Voices Beneath the Rubble.
What started as a solo project by Craig Rossi (ex-Grey Skies Fallen) has now become a full-fledged band. With the addition of bassist/guitarist Paul LaPlaca and drummer Klemen Markelj, Drift Into Black has expanded its sound, exploring various genres while staying true to its doom roots. The past two years have been dedicated to crafting their latest recorded work.
A testament to the band’s musical influences, Voices Beneath The Rubble draws inspiration from doom legends like Candlemass, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Amorphis. This fusion of gothic doom, traditional heavy metal, and progressive elements creates a unique sound that reflects the state of the world. The album tackles difficult themes and concepts, journeying through a spectrum of emotions with atmospheric depth and powerful narratives.
Drummer Klemen Merkjel challenged Craig Rossi to sing clean for the entire album. This resulted in a more poignant and intimate vocal performance, adding a new dimension to the band’s sound. Guest vocalist ALYXX also made a significant contribution, lending her soaring vocals to provide stunning harmonies and a theatrical impact. Bassist Paul LaPlaca, for the first time, showcased his additional guitar skills in the band, notably in the restrained outro of ‘December.‘
Craig Rossi states, “I see this album as a narration of the world’s demise. The theme and subject align with what we see around this slowly dying planet. We are our own worst enemies.”
Available Friday, Voices Beneath the Rubble can be pre-ordered here and streamed exclusively right here, right now.
