Dark metal quartet Valletta formed last May in Raleigh, NC. The project’s rhythm section is comprised of two Mo’ynoq members: bassist Donald Boyd and drummer Justin Valletta. Speaking of drummers, while Will Goodyear is lead guitarist here, he was behind a drum kit for the self-titled Between the Buried and Me debut in 2002. The band also features the snarl of Lord Almighty vocalist/guitarist Keenan Carroll. With these talents combined, Decibel is amped to share the first Valletta single, “Come Alive.”
From the first contagious riff, “Come Alive” is somewhere between an anthem and a battle cry. Based on this track, Valletta reveal some similarities with bands like Cloak or Tribulation if they listened to more hardcore. But as the song twists around Goodyear’s mid-song solo, it reveals a foundation of downcast, blackened rock ‘n’ roll. At 3 minutes and 33 seconds long, there’s no wasted time or gristle-trimming needed on “Come Alive.” This single is as lean as it is mean; a fittingly muscular and menacing introduction to Valletta’s shadowy sound.
“‘Come Alive’ is a call to action for those who remain silent in the face of mass tragedies caused by the religious dogma and divisive politics that their blind belief helps perpetuate,” the band says in a statement. “It is a challenge to perceive these events through a different lens.”
