For Those About Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Heilung, Russian Circles and Total Maniac

What’s up? It’s your old boy Waldo here to inform you about some new and upcoming releases, good bad, or otherwise. Remember, I’m not an elitist, you just have bad taste.

The overnight sensation Heilung is releasing Drif, which means “a gathering” on Season of Mist. So, first off this is not metal. That’s right, this is not metal. This is some folky, droney, gather-‘round-a-campfire-and-bang-on-a-drum kinda thing. I feel like everyone knows this band, but if you’re not in the know, think opening music for Conan the Barbarian. A “pandemic record,” the trio is using hand crafted “ancient” instruments, to sing folk songs about love and trees and stuff. Yeah, mostly trees, I think. While I see the appeal of this sort of thing, and the imagery is indeed stark, this gets a little repetitive in its folkiness. I’ll bet the live show is interesting. Strap ya horns on and dance around a fire. 6 fucking Pecks.

One of this birdbrain’s favorite bands, Russian Circles, is releasing their eighth, Gnosis. If you aren’t into heavy-ass instrumental music, move on, this isn’t for you. It’s almost hard to describe this in a way, as the songs aren’t really “about” anything and are more of a feel. That being said, this is a more brooding, darker affair, especially compared to the crisper sounding Blood Year. Gnosis has a lot of mood shifts, but it’s pecking HEAVY. I dig it. 7 Fucking Pecks.

Total Maniac is a super fun band I found on Bandcamp. I’m totally beaking digging this release. Self-described “thrash and roll” that brings to mind proto speed metal, a tiny bit of power metal, and rock ‘n’ roll all in one punkish package. Love it! 8 Fucking Pecks.

Waldo out!
