Five For Friday: September 10, 2021

It’s a week for big names this week, Decibel readers.

We’ve got the latest here from Andrew W.K. and Metallica, which alone is enough to fill several columns, but we’ve got some lesser-known ground to cover as well.

Enjoy!

Andrew W.K. – God Is Partying

Do you have a party going on this weekend? No? Well, don’t worry, because almost everything counts as partying to Andrew W.K. And whatever you’re doing counts as partying when listening to the anthem-packed sounds of God Is Partying, with a sound as off-the-wall and colorful as the stains on Andrew’s white shirt. And a lot of the riffs are really solid too. That helps.

Mastiff – Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth

Here’s what I had to say earlier this year about Leave Me The Ashes Of The Earth:

If you’re in the mood for a good crushing, the latest album from Mastiff should help you get that out of your system. The band is a five-piece outfit from Hull, UK, and comes loaded with devotion to sludge, black metal, and all the varieties of ‘core styles from the 2000s. It’s a rousing blend of savage power that’s ready for the mosh pit as it is for your next clandestine ritual in the woods.

Metallica – Metallica (reissue)/Various Artists – Blacklist

In recent years, Metallica has been reissuing their back-catalog in the form of extensive box-sets with tons of extra goodies packed in for their legions of fans. This year, it’s the Black Album’s turn. But the band took it a step further by compiling a group of guest artists to cover all the songs on the album, giving multiple acts a shot at each song. This includes bands like Volbeat and Ghost, along with mainstream voices like Miley Cyrus and St. Vincent. It’s a cool way to commemorate the highest-selling heavy metal album of all (depending on how you classify Back In Black).

Seven Spires – Gods Of Debauchery

Epic. Boston’s Seven Spires weaves death, gothic, metalcore, and power metal into a terrifying symphonic storm. Vocalist Adrienne Cowan, currently the keyboardist for Winds of Plague, is an absolute powerhouse on the mic, and leads the rest of the band as they blast, chug and thrash through the speakers. If you like your metal elaborate but still immediately engaging, this is the right place to look.

Zealot R.I.P. – The Extinction of You

Featuring members of Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour, CombatWoundedVeteran, Frodus and Fairweather, Zealot R.I.P. borrows from a lot of places but still comes together into a coherent sound. With vibes that resemble Entombed, Unsane, Driller Killer, and everything in between, it’s music made for shouting and destroying.
