Five For Friday: March 26, 2021

Hello, Decibel readers.

I hope you like death metal, because we’ve got a lot of it loaded up for this week. But if not (why are you here? lol), there’s still the return of Genghis Tron and some awesome trad-metal from Witchseeker I hope you’ll like.

Enjoy!

Celestial Sanctuary – Soul Diminished

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume this band got their name from the awesome Bolt Thrower song on The IVth Crusade. The band delivers the quality death metal you’d expect from Redefining Darkness Records. Lots of riffs, lots of reverb, lots of atmosphere.

Genghis Tron – Dream Weapon

The mighty Genghis Tron returns. I have fond memories of blasting “Things Don’t Look Good” on my radio show back in the old days. The band always dodged easy definitions. Sitting somewhere at the nexus of metalcore, post-hardcore, post-rock, alternative, indie and God-knows-what-else, the upstate-NY outfit takes you many places. Upon their return, the band takes the listener to a dreamy and subdued place, but still one worth visiting.

Marasmus – Necrotic Overlord

This is some brutal stuff. If you love Origin but wished they talked more about classic, gruesome death metal themes, you’ll love this. The drumming alone is worth a fun listen, the blasts so crushing and so satisfying.

Memoriam – To The End

Speaking of Bolt Thrower (and Benediction), Karl Willets and his brethren carry on the legacy of big, booming, and heavy-as-a-tank death metal on Memoriam‘s latest album.

Witchseeker – Scene of the Wild

Alright, get the cheap beers flowing and the fists pumping for some old-school heavy metal from Singapore. Check out some of the lyrics from the album’s title track (presented on the Bandcamp page in ALL CAPS):

FRIDAY NIGHT FEELING EAGER INSIDE
A RESTLESS ANIMAL THAT’S READY TO STRIKE
MY HEART IS RAGING LIKE IT’S READY TO KILL
I LONG FOR ACTION AND SOME DANGEROUS THRILLS

No stupid feigned irony, no holier-than-thou detachment, no BS. Just metal. Really catchy metal at that.
