Track Premiere: Bent Sea – ‘Downed at a Gulp’

Normally, Bent Sea is a band featuring Megadeth/Cadaver/ex-Soilwork drummer Dirk Verbeuren on drums and guitar, Aborted vocalist Sven de Caluwé on the mic and extreme metal legend Shane Embury on bass. For the band’s Instagrind project, however, Verbeuren decided to do things differently, recruiting a different lineup for every song on the album. Tracks are released randomly, so it’s always a surprise when something new drops.

Today, Bent Sea is Verbeuren on guitar, Mike Paparo (Inter Arma) on vocals, Revocation’s Brett Bamberger on bass and Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, ex-Discordance Axis) on drums. Their contribution to Instagrind is the sub-minute ripper “Downed at a Gulp,” which features the quartet in full deathgrind madness.

“When Dave Witte’s behind the kit, you know the blast beats are gonna have that swing!” Verbeuren says. “What a pleasure to have Dave contribute to the Instagrind. Together with Brett and Mike, they brought their A-game to the D-beat. The resulting track slides down the esophagus like a knife in butter!”

“When Dirk asks you blast for him,” Witte tells Decibel, “You do it, no matter how long it’s been. [laughs] It was fun dusting off the ole blast beat for this!”
