What’s up, guys? It’s your ol’ boy Waldo here to let you know about some new releases to help get you through these trying times.
20 Buck Spin has been killing it lately—almost every release from the label has been really solid. Hailing from Little Rock Arkansas, Terminal Nation is unleashing the fury that is Holocene Extinction. This is definitely not for any casual death metal fan. For years people, have been doing throwbacks to Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse etc. Terminal Nation is definitely calling in some Autopsy vibes here. This thing is pissed off and mean. Musically, this is all over any form of extreme metal, from thrash to doom to death to grind, but it always feels like it’s a cohesive package. Lyrically there is a “message” on each of these tracks, which lends to a more punk vibe in this thing. If the production was a little better (some of the riffs get lost in the murkiness) this would get a much higher rating. But I’m still digging this. 8 Fucking Pecks.
Remember Messiah? Well they’re back. Former Noise Records alumni haven’t released a new record since 1994. So, what about this you ask? Fatal Grotesque Symbols finds the band 26 years later and losing no ground. This EP is one new song and re recordings of two tracks from the ’90s. I mean, it’s kinda cool the band is back, but is this necessary? Couldn’t they just get on with it and do the full-length? This is definitely early death/death thrash, and it seems that they haven’t lost a step (well as much as I can tell with one song). 5 Fucking Pecks
Speaking of old school, U.K. thrashers Onslaught are releasing their seventh LP, Generation Antichrist. For those that don’t know, Onslaught has been around since like, I dunno, ’82 or something like that. New singer Dave Garnett is definitely a suitable replacement for classic vocalist Sy Keeler. This is a pretty good release, the songs are great energetic thrash, but they come across as less than energetic production wise. If you’ve never heard of these guys, this works fine, but better to start with ’85’s Power from Hell. 6 Fucking Pecks.
Well, that’s all for now folks… Waldo out!
