Seattle-based funeral doom quartet Un had what was arguably the biggest year of their career in 2018, releasing their sophomore album, Sentiment, to largely-positive reviews in September via Translation Loss. Not content to rest on their laurels, Un have confirmed that they will release a brand-new split with blackened doomsayers Coltsblood. The split—which will be released on digital and cassette formats on February 15—features one new song from each band.
“Every Fear Illuminated,” which you can stream below, is Un’s contribution to the split. One of the best songs the band have written, “Every Fear Illuminated” finds a balance between pensive, clean playing and crushing, monolithic doom without ever losing sight of the sorrowful core of the song. Coming in at over 21 minutes, “Every Fear Illuminated” is a large canvas and Un cover it gracefully, weaving depressed melodies, ambience and the occasional bit of feedback into the song.
Parker Chandler (Windhand/Cough) contributes vocals to the song, adding a layer of haunting atmosphere to the track.
“‘Every Fear Illuminated’ was written and recorded in the spring of 2017 as a direct response to the loss of so many friends here in the Pacific Northwest,” guitarist/vocalist Monte Mccleery tells Decibel. “Now, finally to be released nearly two years later, this song weighs even heavier in our hearts. We are proud to have our friend Parker Chandler contribute vocals to this very personal song, as well as share the release with UK Doom titans Coltsblood, who both undoubtedly relate to this experience of intense grief and remorse.”
