For Those About to Squawk: Skull Pit, Funeral Chic, Organic

Well guys, it’s that time of year when the releases start slowing down. There’s so much going on, but not so much musically. There’s gotta be one thing I like this go ‘round, right? I mean, the odds are… well, nevermind.  Let’s just see what’s up, shall we?

What if I said the words Skull Pit to you?  What image would that summon up? Well, it’s certainly not this… Skull Pit is a new band, well sort of a band, featuring 2 guys from Exumer and Church of Misery and apparently they’ve been trading files and coming with this project for quite some time. So the “titular” Skull Pit on Metal Blade, what does this sound like? It doesn’t entirely sound like either band, but at the same time, it sounds like BOTH bands. I know, confusing, huh? Musically, there’s definitely more Church Of Misery here, stoner riffs abound, but there is some proto-speed and NWOBHM thrown in for good measure. The riffs here are great, but as a whole, I’m not really sure what to make of it. I want to like it, I just kind of don’t, but shitting on this seems unfair too. So, I dunno… check this out, or don’t; it’s a ballsy collab to be sure.

5 Fucking Pecks

North Carolina’s own Funeral Chic is billed as “one of the most dangerous and explosive bands in the underground” and while I wouldn’t go that far, Superstition on Prosthetic is certainly a nasty piece of work. This is proto-speed metal, or just speed metal. You can tell these dudes are true metal fans and don’t really want to peck around too much and just get straight to the point. Fast guitars, fast drums, howled vocals lead to a breakdown here and there. Imagine a bunch of dudes that show up to your house, drink all of your beer, do all your cocaine and leave the place a wreck. That’s what this sounds like. I pecking dig it.

7 Fucking Pecks

There’s a whole slew of bands coming out now flying the OSDM flag. Some of them are killer. Organic is one of them. I was prepared to hate on this, but this is beaking FIERCE. Carved in Flesh is clearly not breaking any new ground, but man, this is nasty. OLD-SCHOOL DEATH METAL, that’s what this is about, no bones about it. It’s nasty, there are hooks, riffs and those vocals. Although, as a society, can we get over that HM2 sound already?

Until next time…
