For Those About to Squawk: Deafheaven, Black Fast, Extremity

Hot enough for you? Maybe these new releases will keep you cool…

This is going to be a tough one, as this band is completely polarizing. Breaking down boundaries is something Deafheaven does… and in this birdbrain’s opinion, they do it well. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is, well… different. If there’s one thing that can never be said about Deafheaven, they never put out the same record twice. Calling this black metal is a stretch, but it is extreme, sorta. There are some indie rock moments (nods to Red House Painters), some arena rock parts (nods to Smashing Pumpkins) and of course some shoegaze here. The thing to note is this is all wrapped up with intense vocals, melodic passages and general melancholy. Considering this a continuation of New Bermuda would be unfair. Troo metal fans are most likely not going to dig this, but it is a beautiful, epic piece.  Deafheaven really seem to have taken all of their influences and finally come up with a cohesive, unique sound which can only be them.

8 Fucking Pecks.

Harkening back to the old-school thrash sound, Black Fast will be releasing Spectre of Ruin on eOne.  To call this “old-school thrash” is not entirely fair as Black Fast are a little meaner in sound and WAY more modern sounding than their ’80s/’90s predecessors. So about this record, it rips. There is less technicality or weirdness on this release than their previous effort, but I do have to say that they are “blacker” and “faster” than ever. There are definitely some more “blackened” elements to this but all in all, it’s a driving record with fast riffing and mean as peck vocals.

7 Fucking Pecks.

Nasty as peck old-school style metal seems to be prevalent lately and Extremity (from CA) are no exception to this. Coffin Birth on 20 Buck Spin is, well, extreme. This is about as death metal as you can get and does not disappoint. Just listen to that nasty-ass bass guitar and those vocals. This is mid-paced, fast, slow, you name it, it’s just nasty as peck. I’m really pecking digging this and as their first full-length, I am pleasantly surprised.  You should really peck these guys out if you’re a fan of extreme metal. It’s kick ass.

Until next time… Waldo out!
