German death metallers Morgoth were resurrected in 2010 after a long silence. In 2014, the group unleashed the God Is Evil 7″ to wide applause (from the death metal community, particularly in Europe). All seemed well for Morgoth’s return. Then, growler Marc Grewe and team had a falling out. Determined to see Morgoth march on, the group, lead by guitarist Harry Busse, enlisted Disbelief grunter Karsten Jäger to fill the gap.
Well, turns out Busse, Jäger, and team have turned out a fantastic death metal album in Ungod. It’s the album that should’ve split crowd-pleaser Cursed and modern-think album Odium. It’s trademark old-school Morgoth. And it’s killer!
“The first idea that existed for ‘Traitor’ was the marching riff you find in the verse of the song,” says Busse. “After we wrote the bridge and the chorus, the song was almost finished from its instrumental side. I still had no idea in which direction the lyrics should go. Only when Sebastian came up with the clean guitar, that introduces and completes the song, did I have the idea for a theme that would perfectly match the sadness and desperation of this interlude, followed by the brutality and mercilessness of the song itself. A child soldier, betrayed by the ones supposed to protect him, betrayed by the “Traitor’.”
** Morgoth’s new album, Ungod, is out now on Century Media Records. It’s available HERE on CD and Vinyl. Death metal fans, even new school fans, would do very well to check out Ungod. One of the best death metal albums of the year.
