Every other Friday, Waldo the African Grey Parrot, frontbird of thrash-grind immortals Hatebeak, will get you caught up on the week’s latest “extreme” releases.
Wow, Happy Halloween everyone. Since I’m on a bi-weekly cycle here, Halloween will have come and gone, and we all know that it’s my favorite holiday. It seems the labels don’t have much lined up for this one, but we’ll try to mutter through anyway.
KRISIUN release their eighth record in 16 years, The Great Execution on Century Media. If you are a fan of the brothers three, you should know what to expect. These guys bring the death metal hate with a flair of the Brazilian style. No, not that Brazilian style, more of the Sepultura-esque turned-on-its-pecking-ear style. Not that Krisiun sound like Sep – they don’t. This band has been at this for years, really, and gets little to no attention. This is a pretty solid death metal record, although your boy Waldo wonders what’s up with the ambient-style stuff and thinks it has no real place in brootal death. Check out “The Will to Potency” – this drummer is fast, and I mean fast. If you know Krisiun, the odds are you are already going to pick this up, but if you don’t and like death metal, you should too. 6 FUCKING PECKS.
CRAFT hit us with Void, their first in six years or so; again, there’s nothing really new here. The production is a little clean for a band that is considered so misanthropic. I’m sure that a lot of people are looking forward to this. It really doesn’t do that much, just kind of standard black metal trem-picking mixed with some more blackened death riffs. Lyrics about misanthropy? Check. Lyrics about destruction and hate? Check. Lyrics about Anti Cosmic Satanism? Uhhh… check. This guy is definitely no poet. Check the chorus for “I Want To Commit Murder.” They are pretty easy to get into if that type of sentiment appeals to you. Not bad. 5 FUCKING PECKS.
Are you sick of hearing bands re-record their older material? Are you SICK OF IT ALL? Well, SOIA, did just that on Nonstop. One can only hope to believe this is a convenient way out of their contract with Century Media. Twenty awesome pecking classics are re-done for this Halloween season. This is a real beak-scratcher to me. Why would they do this? The track list is great, and actually they keep the life in these songs. It’s not horrible, although there are some mix-ups with some DJ’s here and there; on the surface this appears to be a lot worse than it actually is. Usually these things pretty much suck, but this is a little fun. It’s Clobberin’ Time. 5 FUCKING PECKS.
This time, I’m going to forgo the old-school peck, and go with a semi-old-school peck; well, it is old-school, it’s just not a band. Check out SEND BACK MY STAMPS. An online zine collection from the old days… you know, when there were still like ‘zines and stuff? Jason from Misery Index has got himself quite a collection here. All of these can be read and perused, and really any metalhead can find something to waste plenty of time with. Solid. Please check it out; I’m also sure he’s still accepting submissions, and this is a great way to keep this stuff alive.
