Listen: Sumac Release Release Massive New Song, “Two Beasts”

December 7, 2020 Emily Bellino
News Post Metal, Sludge Metal, Sumac.

Post-metal gods Sumac—Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom), Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) and Brian Cook (Russian Circles, ex-Botch)—already released an album this year with the epic May You Be Held, released in October on Thrill Jockey. The year isn’t over for the experimental trio, though; this morning, Sumac surprise released “Two Beasts,” a sprawling, 19-minute single that spans various moods and intensities.

“Two Beasts” creates a tense, anxious atmosphere with its noisy sludge and discordant guitars, Turner’s vocals a roar over the music, but Sumac aren’t afraid to play with the white space, letting notes ring out and playing with the white space in between them to amplify the power of the song.

Sumac released “Two Beasts” earlier today via Sub Pop, and it’s streaming below via Bandcamp. Head over to Thrill Jockey to hear May You Be Held.
