Track Premiere: EXP – “Speed of Light”

On their self-titled debut full-length, new Brooklyn-based avant-garde noise rock outfit EXP have enlisted a veritable who’s-who of New York noise legends, including members of Cop Shoot Cop, Swans and Live Skull to assist and augment their sound. Therein lies a guidepost to the music we’re offering up with “Speed of Light.” It’s gritty, battle-scarred and snotty with a Velvet Underground-meets-trash rock vibe. The trio of ex-Cop Shoot Cop’s J. Natz (bass/vocals), A.E. Csaky (guitar/synth) and Annabel Lee (violin/synth/piano) recorded with assistance from drummers Bloody Rich Hutchins (Live Skull) and Phil Puleo (ex-Cop Shoot Cop/Swans), as well as Lubricated Goat guitarist, Stu Spasm. It’s a stacked lineup, well versed in the dingy, art-damaged punk of the NYC noise scene.

EXP was recorded at Martin Bisi’s BC studios and Bloody Rich Hutchins’ Studio H. It’s set for release on vinyl and digitally via Reptilian Records on September 4. Place your preorder here (Reptilian) or here (Bandcamp).

Mainman J. Natz had this to say about the track:

“‘Speed Of Light’ is another one that started as one of my bass lines over which Csaky does her thing, namely weaving a surrounding hornet swarm of guitar over and throughout. A perfectly fine way of writing a song but a less than desirable way to record. Still, this backward approach of laying down the guitar, bass and vocal tracks first and recording the drum track last seemed to suit EXP well. Drummer par excellence Bloody Ritch Hutchins came in and knocked it out on the first take. The boy does not fuck about.
“Lyrically, the song is made up of bar-room banter, the sort of exasperation overheard on any given bar stool in the present-day US of A.”
