Chicago-based stoner band Psychic Nurse just released a new video, “(Not Your) B!tch,” and you can check it out with us before everybody else. The band formed in Chicago in 2019, unfortunately playing their first show right before pandemic lockdown. They wouldn’t play another show until March 2022.

“Miguel White (the drummer) and I (Reilly Valentine, front(wo)man) had been playing together in other projects around town—mostly indie/garage rock bands—and eventually decided to venture off on our own to chase a heavier sound,” says Valentine. “Growing up in the ’90s, I was really influenced by the alternative rock scene (Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, then later Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon, etc.) as well as strong, female-fronted bands like No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette, Garbage, and  Hole. Working at music venues got me really into the rock and metal scene, and that idea of merging riff-forward rock with the glamorous front(wo)men I admired growing up has been the goal ever since. We’ve had a rotating cast of lead guitarists and bass, but we are currently playing with Josh Boyer (guitar) and Justin Valero (bass).”

The video was shot at Thalia Hall in Chicago, where some of the band members worked at the time, as well as at Valentine’s parents’ garage, which they made to look like a hospital. It was filmed by Larval Productions and Pablo Ponce and edited by Ponce. Music-wise, it blends a harder, stoner grunge sound with much-craved ’90s nostalgia.

“The song itself is meant as advice to a younger me to stop being so loyal to people who didn’t deserve it,” adds Valentine. “Is it advice that I’ve taken? No, not once! But I’m getting better, and it’s definitely a solid, no-bullshit version of myself that I strive for. The lyrics are simple and repetitive, but sometimes it takes being beaten over the head with a message before it sinks in.”
