Video Premiere: Hexis – “Nunquam”

June 2, 2022 Adem Tepedelen
Exclusive, Featured, Streaming, Track Premiere Aetrunum, black metal, Debemur Morti Productions, denmark, Hardcore, Hexis, Nunquam, Post Metal, premiere.

By all accounts, Denmark’s post black metal quartet Hexis are touring road dogs. This post arrives just as they are set to embark on a monthlong Canadian tour, starting in British Columbia in the west, and working their way east to Newfoundland in the Maritimes (dates below). There probably aren’t a lot of North American bands that would spend a month in Canada, so it’s a pretty impressive undertaking, especially since Hexis—Filip Andersen (vocals), Dalle Oldman (guitar), Luca Mele (bass/backing vocals), Felix Kothe (drums)—don’t have a new album out (yet). However, in conjunction with the start of the tour, they’re releasing a brand new video for the track “Nunquam,” which is taken from their upcoming Debemur Morti Productions release Aeternum.

The video for “Numquam” is shot in a forest setting in stark black and white and offers a brief blast of the band’s deft combination of hardcore vocals set to post black metal savagery. Clocking under three minutes, it offers ragged, raging vocals; relentless riffery and just enough guitar melody and tension to hold it all together. Aeternum was recorded, mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman in Sweden and will be released on CD, tape, vinyl and digital via Debemur Morti Productions on August 26th. Pre-orders for the album are available from the label’s EU shop here; US shop here  and Bandcamp shop here.

Here’s what vocalist Filip Andersen had to say about the track and video:

“I guess the kind of guitar riffing we have going on in this track is somewhat similar to what we were doing a lot back in the days when we started—a band like Switzerland’s Shora being a big inspiration. But I will still say, the compositional process for this song was really different than it used to be. For example, ‘Nunquam’ has a lot of smaller details and other things that we never focused too much on back in the day. Overall, it is just a lot better written. I guess you also can say that the song is more technical compared to what we have done before. Personally, the biggest difference for me is that I think my vocal work is a lot better than anything I have done previously. I really focused a lot on not making the vocal patterns too static/monotonous, since I have the feeling that a lot of our old material is suffering from this. It was very important for me to do something which was more alive and a little more all over the place, while still being ‘in your face’. Lyrically, the song is about feeling hopeless, and that the emotion of joy will never come back. So, since we are working with Latin titles on all our songs, ‘Nunquam,’ meaning ‘never,’ just felt like a fitting title.”
