Album Premiere: Heruvim – Shadowheart

Heruvim

Heruvim, an up-and-coming old-school death metal band from Odesa, Ukraine, are releasing their record Shadowheart. All the proceeds from the record will go to support Ukraine and its efforts defending against the Russian invasion.

Formed in 2019 by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Nefarious, Heruvim includes lead guitarist Kick Flis, bassist Vyacheslav Babienko, and Nick on drums. The band released a two-song demo in 2021 and played their first show. Now that Ukraine is facing an invasion, they want their first full-length to benefit their home country.

Heruvim reportedly live by the words: “Apathy is death. Worse than death, because at least a rotting corpse feeds the beasts and insects.”

Based on the Conan universe created by Robert Irwin Howard, the record contains hemes like the fall of the Acheron empire from the Conan universe, as well as, in the bands’ words, “a message against the imperial regime of Russia, as well as against all totalitarian, inhuman systems built on right-wing and imperial ambitions. The song ‘Oppression’ is about inhuman colonizations and wars of aggression, class inequality and capitalism, (and) that any sales system, one way or another, leads to war.

Shadowheart is about love, about strong, true feelings,” they conclude.
