Five For Friday: August 13, 2021

Greetings, Decibel readers!

We’re getting a little technical on you this week. There’s a lot here for the tech-death nerds. Tech-death mixed with deathcore, tech-death mixed with dissonant weird stuff, tech-death mixed with proggy post-hardcore. If you want metal that stretches the boundaries of style and ability, there’s a lot to choose from this week. Also a band who REALLY loves mid-era Morbid Angel, and also GOST. It can’t all be sweep picking, after all.

Enjoy!

Alchemy of Flesh – Ageless Abominations

Here’s what we had to say about the Domination-era Morbid Angel worshipers in our full album stream:

Alchemy of Flesh succeed at crafting death metal that feels large in its execution; songs like “Knotter of Entrails” features riffs that loom and creep before going in for the kill, a strong contrast to “Lave Storm” or “House of Earth,” which grab the listener with driving, straight-ahead approach.

Ageless Abominations doesn’t seek to be anything more than a pure death metal album and it doesn’t need to. The nine songs on the album—which also features old-school feeling cover art by Mike Browning—display a precise dedication to the genre.

Burial in the Sky – The Consumed Self

Imagine if Between The Buried And Me returned to the sound of their first few albums (a man can dream) and did a collaboration with Obscura. If that sounds totally awesome to you, as it should, then you’ll love what Burial In the Sky has in store on this innovative, forward-looking album. The band has a brilliant flare for blending emotive arrangements with brutality that I don’t think I’ve ever heard done in a tech-death setting like this. Keep on ear on this band.

Diskord – Degenerations

Ok, so now take that combination I mentioned before and throw in Demilich and Demigod, because why the hell not? This is the third album from one of the finest acts in Norway that doesn’t wear face paint.

Fleshbore – Embers Gathering

Meanwhile. The debut full-length album from this Indianapolis act combines the vibe of The Acacia Strain and Despised Icon and throws it in with the flair of Necrophagist, Origin and Archspire. It’s basically well-executed tech-death with some chuggs and pig squeals. It’s a practical buffet of crushing sounds from the last two decades in brutal music. Dig in!

GOST – Rites of Love and Remembrance

Much like their comrade in Perturbator, GOST has flown the synthwave nest and integrated new sounds into its core palette. The project was always one of the more punchy and pounding in the scene, and GOST has continued to bring the power with new gothic atmospheres recalling 90s industrial and gothic metal. Had a blast seeing GOST at Maryland Deathfest years ago, and would love to see some of this in a similar setting.
