It feels like a lifetime ago, but Schammasch was the one the last acts I saw actually perform live. Back in December 2019, they made their U.S. debut at the Los Angeles (OK, fine, Santa Ana) edition of Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest. And Decibel was thrilled to experience large sections of of one of our Top 40 Albums of 2019 in the cloaked flesh.
Obviously, things have gone not great for most everyone since then, and that includes our Swiss progressive black metal friends, whose momentum on the back of the stunning Hearts of No Light LP and American debut performance was abruptly halted by you know what.
If you’re looking for a silver lining (and who isn’t?) Schammasch have been afforded some time to shoot the absolutely striking video for Hearts of No Light track “Ego Sum Omega,” which frontman and mastermind C.S.R. details below.
“Almost a year has passed, since the release of Hearts of No Light. Many things that should have followed the album’s release fell victim to the pandemic, yet we were fortunate enough having been given a very narrow time frame to be able to realize one of these things — the visual extension of ‘Ego Sum Omega’, filmed in the harsh, majestic & breathtakingly beautiful mountains of Switzerland’s Engadine, parts of it in the magical forests of Sils-Maria, chosen accordingly, in connection to the song’s thematic. Words can never do justice to this place, but do see for yourself.”
The fantastic Hearts of No Light is still available from Prosthetic Records. If you’re still fucking up, remedy that here and here.
