Full Album Stream: Rotting Kingdom – ‘A Deeper Shade of Sorrow’

We first met Kentucky’s new doom/death pantheon over two years when we featured Rotting Kingdom on Demo:listen, and at the time we were already a little late to the party. Rotting Kingdom’s debut EP came out late in the summer of 2017. According to the band, Rotting Kingdom “began writing what would become A Deeper Shade of Sorrow shortly after the release of the self-titled EP in 2017 with no real vision other than to keep the creative flow going and continue to push and expand our sound.” The band continues to explain how they “took much more time in the studio” recording their debut full length than they spent with their EP.

“I think that really stands out in the quality and production,” says Rotting Kingdom bassist Chuck McIntyre. “Many hails once again to Jason Groves at Sneak Attack Studios here in Lexington and Damian Herring at Subterranean Watchtower Studios for being so easy to work with and really knocking it out of the park.”

Now, almost three years since the release of their self-titled debut EP, the return to Rotting Kingdom’s world of expansive and simultaneously crushing azure and violet doom death is imminent. Six tracks deep, way heavier and more violent than you’re expecting if you were a fan of their debut, A Deeper Shade of Sorrow enters the world as more than another plaintive doom death album. With A Deeper Shade of Sorrow, Rotting Kingdom unveil some new breed of monstrous, deeply pained and twice-as-devastating approach to mixing the psychopathic carnage of death metal with the implacable pathos of doom.
