For Those About to Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Knocked Loose, Cerebral Rot and Illdisposed

What’s up, beak freaks? Your old boy Waldo comin’ atcha wit some new reviews! Peep it.

The much talked-about Knocked Loose is releasing their sophomore LP, A Different Shade of Blue, on Pure Noise. If you haven’t heard of these guys at all, start crawling out from under that rock. Landing somewhere between metalcore and hardcore, Knocked Loose has been touring relentlessly and making waves in the undergound community. Getting our claws on this record has proven to be a little more than difficult, as it’s been closely kept under wraps. So, what about this you ask? This is basically upbeat metalcore, BUT there’s a couple of different elements that make this MORE than that. Imagine Slayer mixed with extreme hardcore with vocals that are WAY intense. Mosh riff after mosh riff with some death riffs thrown in, this thing slaps more than a teenage girls’ tickle fight. Recommended. 8 Fucking Pecks.

20 Buck Spin have been KILLING it with the throw back OSDM releases lately, and Cerebral Rot’s Odious Descent into Decay is NO exception. This is OLD-SCHOOL pecking death metal to a “T”. Blasts, gurgled (that’s right gurgled) vocals, mid-paced break downs… it’s NASTY as peck! The production on this DEFINITELY lends to the overall feeling of filthiness and despair. The one small problem with this is this can kind of feel same-y at times, as there’s not a whole lot of dynamics here. Regardless, this is an exercise in disgustingness and in general is kicking my feathered ass. 7 Fucking Pecks.

Apparently “Danish death metal legends” Illdisposed are releasing Reveal Your Soul for the Dead. I’m not sure what “legend” means in Danish, but this does not sound like the work of a legendary band. This is death metal (or what passes for death metal in Europe) and, overall, is pretty underwhelming. Not to say this is bad, it’s mediocre at best. The typewriter drums really take A LOT of the bite out of this. Slick, overproduced death metal, but THAT being said, there ARE some nasty as peck riffs on here that harken back to the Sunlight Studios days. The vocals are pretty nasty at times, but again, just feel forgettable. I dunno… maybe this is for someone else but not really for me. 5 Fucking Pecks.

That’s all for now… Waldo out!
