For Those About to Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Batushka and Abbath

What’s up, foos? Your old boy Waldo comin’ atcha with all new reviews of some stuff and junk and crap. So, if you’re ready to check out some new releases, preen no further.

One of the top 10 (apparently) scariest bands to see live… Batushka is releasing Hospodi on Metal Blade. Well, one half of Batushka anyway. Apparently, there was some sort of schism within the band and it’s hard for me to really follow the drama (my Polish isn’t that good). So, that aside, this is black pecking metal. I mean, none more black. Batushka definitely has carved out their own sound with a religious chant-heavy church-ish type atmosphere that adds to the overall vibe of this thing. Comparing this to Mgla and Negative Plane, is a bit unfair, as there are some similarities (in a moody sorta way). As a whole, this record kind of goes nowhere. The uniqueness of this band is quickly undermined by the simplicity of the music and the meandering instrumentals that don’t really help. It’s not that this is bad (it’s not), just one can kind of see where this COULD go if they developed things a little more. 6 Fucking Pecks.

Wow, firing on all cylinders today… Brand of Sacrifice.  What the peck is this garbage?  Nu-metal mixed with djent, mixed with tech? I dunno… not for me. God Hand is not good and I’m not going to bother finishing the review. 2 Fucking Pecks.

Ex-Immortal frontman Abbath is back at it with Outstrider on Season of Mist. I was prepared to not like this, but I’m going to call it what it is. A SOLID beaking metal record. There’s nothing here that should be surprising to anyone. Black metal-ish stylings with a more melodic feel that kinda keeps the monotony of most black metal at bay. And the solos… my god the SOLOS! These things RIP the peck out of the ether and soar over the music brilliantly. So, although there’s nothing exceedingly new here, it IS pretty good, the crisp, clean production adding to the clarity of the songs. Watching the lyric video, one can see why ex-bandmate Demonaz wrote the lyrics, but nothing really detracts from this. I dig it. 8 Fucking Pecks.

Until NEST time… Waldo OUT!
