For Those About to Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Ravensire, Culloden and the Convalescence

Wow, I don’t know if it’s me, but there just doesn’t seem to be a lot going on this go ‘round.  I DID miss the awesome Gold & Grey by Baroness, so if you haven’t had a chance yet, check that out. So anyway, for those NOT in the know, my name is Waldo, and I’m the lead singer for a band called Hatebeak and I’m here, reviewing some upcoming releases. Oh, and I’m a parrot.

So, do you like Manowar? Then you should check out Ravensire A Stone Engraved In Red. First of all, I’d like to say, that ravens are NOT cool. I mean, they can’t even talk… Anyway, this OPENS with some ravens cawing, so like I’m not sure what that’s about.  This is trad/fantasy metal. I mean there’s not more to say about it than that. In the vein of Manowar, these are epic songs that tell stories about wars and crap like that.  The production here fits the vibe and the music hits every note expected. My gripe here… there’s nothing very exciting about this. I mean, it definitely doesn’t suck, but I mean, why? This is a second rate Manowar really and although it’s fun, it just does nothing for me. 4 Fucking Pecks.

In the same vein as above, here’s another trad metal band. Culloden is releasing Withcpricker, and I’m only REALLY reviewing this because of the title. Like WHAT THE PECK is a WITCHPRICKER?!?! I mean, how does one get THAT job?  I dunno.  Anyway.  This is again, pretty cool, it hits every note that it needs to. Songs about “metal” topics.  I do gotta say, that this is a little more raw than a lot of this stuff, so it rocks a little harder. These guys seem like they have fun doing this. Again, not my cup of tea (they’re british, so that’s appropriate). Just like… what in the beak is a witchpricker? My review… trad metal delivered the way it’s supposed to. 5 Fucking Pecks.

Sometimes because of the name, a band can be difficult to google. The Convalescence is releasing Monument of Misery. The claim to fame on this record here is that it features Cryptopsy singer Matt McGachy on one track. This is death metal (although the pics of them in corpse paint kinda threw me off). Has some symphonic elements, screamed and guttural vocals. I really didn’t think I’d like this, but all in all it’s not bad, and even has some riffs thrown in there. Check out their track “The Pit”

Which is different from this “The Pit”

5 Fucking Pecks.

Anyway, until next time. Waldo out.
