In its grandest form, sludge metal holds onto doom’s larger-than-life flair for the dramatic while adding a sense of harsh, suffocating ugliness. This is certainly the case of newcomers Boghaunter, who create mood-setting, almost ethereal, atmospheres before crushing them with feedback-covered riffs and raw vocals.
Ex-Grief/current Come to Grief guitarist Terry Savastano, who considers himself enough of a fan of the band to write in his own feedback, describes it as “”Bludgeoning, intense doom, harsh yet sophisticated. A surreal experience,” and he’s not wrong. Find out for yourself and listen to Writhe, the band’s first outing, below.
Writhe will be available digitally via Seeing Red for name-your-price tomorrow and on CD in May.
