Metal & Beer: Mikkeller Launches New Sultan’s Curse Collab With Mastodon

Denmark’s Mikkeller Brewing, the only European brewery to be part of Decibel‘s first annual Metal and Beer Festival last spring, is releasing a new band collaboration beer tomorrow, Oct. 19, at its U.S. brewery in San Diego. Sultan’s Curse is a limited edition imperial stout brewed in collaboration with Mastodon. Mikkeller’s previous collaboration with Mastodon, Mother Puncher Farmhouse IPA, was one of two beer’s the brewery poured at the Decibel Metal and Beer Fest last April.

“We love collaborating with Mikkeller because we feel like we’re cut from the same cloth,” says Mastodon drummer, Brann Dailor. “Mikkeller is always being incredibly creative and pushing the boundaries in the beer world and that’s what we try to do with our music.”

Sultan’s Curse takes its name from a track from the latest Mastodon album, Emperor of Sand, and draws its inspiration from Middle Eastern spices and flavors (dates, toasted pistachios and cardamom), according to the San Diego brewers responsible for crafting it. “[It’s a] monster imperial stout with intense layers of dates and coffee, which sit gracefully above a complementing cardamom brightness. Toasted pistachios bring depth and texture alongside an integrated spiced and vanilla bouquet from the bourbon-barrel aging.”

There will be a limited bottle release party at Mikkeller San Diego (9366 Cabot Dr.) starting at noon on Thursday. The event takes place before Mastodon’s concert at House of Blues Thursday night. Mikkeller San Diego will also be hosting a party at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge following the show.
