For Those About to Squawk: Waldo’s Highlights of 2011

Every other Friday, Waldo the African Grey Parrot, frontbird of thrash-grind immortals Hatebeak, will get you caught up on the week’s latest “extreme” releases.
Say goodbye to Father Time and hello to Baby New Year. The releases really slow down this time of year; there’s really not much for me to pecking write about, so I’m going to go over some highlights of 2011 briefly, rapido-like. If you’ve missed any of my previous reviews, take the time and check this birdshit out.

We’ll start with DISMA’s Toward the Megalith, TOTAL old-school death from Craig Pillard that punches you square in the beak. No birdshit.

ANTHRAX’s Worship Music was a passable release for a band that has been around 20+ years; notable as a return to form, but a little on the stale-sounding side.

Your old boy Waldo doesn’t care for black metal that much, but KRALLICE spun off Diotima and totally beaking slayed it. Great release.

Grind ‘n’ rollers DRUGS OF FAITH unleashed Corroded and left further proof that Grindfather and Co. still got the Motts.

The Kiwis otherwise known as ULCERATE stepped up the death metal game on The Destroyers of All. Brutal riffs and even brutaller drumming make this a soon-to-be classic.

BRUTAL TRUTH ring in the apocalypse with End Time proving yet again that they CAN (and have) changed the sound of grind.

Sludgesters NOOTHGRUSH re-release their demo on the S/T release. This is like the third re-release for them; however, it’s pecking brutal as hell, a must-have.

Relapse knock it out of the park with obscure old-school death dealers MORTA SKULD on the Through the Eyes of Death re-release. Featuring demo and 7-inch tracks, this is a necessity in death. Good luck finding the original releases. Totally critical.

Two of your boys favorite violent, face-shredding bands got together this year to release And On and On, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED and DESPISE YOU teamed up to kill it on a split filled with vitriol and malice.

MIDNIGHT bring it with Satanic Royalty, proving that old black and thrash is still alive, harkening back to Motorhead and Venom, bang your squawking beaks.

Fucking WORMROT, fucking Dirge, hell yes, grind from Earache, it’s about time.

All Guts, No Glory sums it up for the reunion record from CA’s EXHUMED: gore and more.

Get beaking Cursed, ROTTEN SOUND continues to be the epitome of grindcore with this slab of unadulterated ear-fuckery.

Another notable release isn’t a release at all, or music for that matter: JASON NETHERTON, from Dying Fetus, Misery Index and The Ultraviolence Radio show on XM has assembled a collection of relevant zines.
