For Those About to Squawk: Waldo’s Pecks of the Week

Every other Friday, Waldo the African Grey Parrot, frontbird of thrash-grind immortals Hatebeak, will get you caught up on the week’s latest “extreme” releases.
Your old pal Waldo here, and I’m going to give you a sneak beak into the upcoming releases in the next few weeks that are definitely fit to line your cage with.

Victory Records, in another beak-scratching move, release PATHOLOGY’s Awaken to the Suffering. Have you heard any other Pathology releases? Well, this one doesn’t really differ too much. Therein lies the rub, like Rosie Palmer is on a lonely evening, the death metal equivalent of comfort food. Way better production than any previous release, Pathology are in the subgenre “brutal death metal” for a reason. This is pecking brutal as squawk. This release and the release of the last Jungle Rot on Victory really make me question what Brummel is up to; not that either band doesn’t deserve the attention—they do. One can expect the norm from Pathology: gurgled vokills, breakdowns, blast beats, a little noodling and the like. That is, they never break out of the “brutal death metal” genre, and sometimes one shouldn’t, really. Pathology excel at what they do best, which is brutal pecking death metal. Pretty solid release. 7 Fucking Pecks.

doro the exploro

Seems like DORO pops up every couple of years to remind you that she’s still alive. This time with 25 Years in Rock; even though this German classic used to be kind of babe-a-licious, she looks better on the airbrushed cover. (C’mon even a parrot can comment on someone’s looks.) Who listens to Doro, though? This CD/DVD set contains, well, a bunch of stuff that is cool if you’re a fan, but then who’s a fan, really?

I guess the Germans love Hasselhoff, so producing Doro is no real surprise. I guess there are people out there who still worship Doro; maybe in Europe this stuff is a little more palatable, but here with your fine feathered friend this stuff expired a long time ago. Not that it’s not fun, it certainly is; necessary, however, is a completely different thing. It’s kind of hard to hate on this, but at the same time giving this a complete pass seems a little unreasonable as well. Doro, you get 4 Fucking Pecks.

BRUTAL TRUTH release End Time on Relapse. If you know Brutal Truth, you know kind of what to expect. Not that this is a similar record to any other of their releases; it’s not. A little more weird than Evolution Through Revolution, these grindcore stalwarts do not disappoint with 23 stabs on this platter. If you are new to Brutal Truth, please check this out, or the other releases. It really seems that the band has settled into the addition of Eric Burke. This is the Truth and it is BRUTAL. 8 Fucking Pecks.

Let’s talk old-school; let’s talk old school that you may not know. Let’s talk TORTURE KRYPT. Just check this shit out. Hailing from Asbury Park, NJ, they certainly were the boss. The two demos and the EPs are pretty hard to find, but well worth the search.
