STREAMING: Mayhem “Psywar”

The True Mayhem. Ground zero for Norwegian black metal. Since 1984, the Oslo-based outfit has made waves. Though it would take a good number of years—about three, actually—before Deathcrush hit posers hard, the group’s coup de grace was posthumous debut album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. With Euronymous dead and the Norwegian scene reeling from heavy media pressure, Mayhem didn’t hibernate, actually. They embraced the carnage, doing interviews as if it was just another day in Oslo. Fast forward 20 fucking years, numerous lineup changes, and three more full-lengths—lauded as much as they were derided—and Mayhem, the True Mayhem, has returned. Fronted by De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas vocalist Attila Csihar and backed by Hellhammer, Necrobutcher, and newcomer Teloch (Nidingr), the 2014 iteration of Norway’s oldest black metal band is as deadly and controversial as anything before Deathcrush and after 2007’s comeback effort Ordo ad Chao.
