All the Colors of the Dark

Hey, St. Louis! (or anyone in the Midwest willing to haul it over and under the arches). Starting March 16, our friends at the Awful Nice gallery are showcasing some of the most prominent underground artists creating “work driven by a heavy metal, fantastic or psychedelic aesthetic,” for a show called All the Colors of the Dark. In other words, some of those rad scary-assed, trippy-beautiful album covers you own and can’t stop staring at.
The show is curated by the gallery’s owner, Coby Ellison, and features the amazing work of Arik Roper (best known for his colorful epic sword-and-sorcery album covers for High on Fire, Ancestors, Weedeater); David V. D’Andrea (he’s done droves of lush LSD-drenched concert posters for Roadburn, Om, High on Fire, Swans); French (ornate skull orgies for Scion Rock Fest, Decrepid); Justin Bartlett (evil-as-fug covers for Dragged Into Sunlight, the Secret, Aura Noir, Trap Them); Mark Riddick (notorious death-metal illustrator for Gravehill, Beheaded, Grave Wax, Fetid Zombie); as well as the gallery’s own Coby Ellison (known for his blackened hellish prints, sculptures and forthcoming covers for the Lion’s Daughter and Fister). The show aims to focus on the work exclusively; all prints will be featured without band/concert logos etc. —Shawn Bosler
