Progressive death metal supergroup Contrarian have no shortage of talent — including Nile drummer George Kollias and Mithras shredder Leon Macey — and those skills are well-applied in covering the legendary Death’s “Nothing Is Everything.” The video for the track is streaming below; it’s the last song on Contrarian’s debut full-length Polemic, dropping on Willowtip November 20.
“The following cover of Death’s ‘Nothing Is Everything’ is a tribute to the memory of Chuck Schuldiner,” the band writes, ‘and, as described in the lyrics, to those who have suffered at the hands of mental illness such as many forms of depression, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
“The band went to great lengths to authentically recreate this song off Death’s Individual Thought Patterns, which many consider their most ground-breaking and progressive release to this day.
“The solo on this track was dissected and reconstructed by guitarist Brian Mason [Sulaco], who was also the primary architect in pre-engineering the overall guitar sound on Contrarian’s Polemic. In addition, Jim Tasikas and Brian Mason exclusively use Mason Custom guitars. Brian Mason has not only made custom guitars for Contrarian, but also for members of Napalm Death, Brutal Truth and Nuclear Assault collectively.”
