Back in 2023, Decibel’s co-nerds first crossed paths with Pupil Slicer vocalist/guitarist Kate Davies and drummer Josh Andrews while in support of sophomore LP Blossom. Having made a mark on the scene with their version of chaotic mathcore a la Psyopus and early Dillinger Escape Plan, the band evolved into what would be a more blackened yet melodic sound. Most importantly to us, however, was the way in which Davies’ devotion to video games, er, bloomed into direct influence for their album. The frontperson citied indie darling Outer Wilds and MMORPG titan Final Fantasy XIV as having played a part in the writing of the record. Beyond that, the duo shared how deep their dedication to the medium was: Andrews’ love of all things Nintendo, Davies’ need to 100 percent entire series or the pair’s excitement at their then impending tour with Japanese drone legends Boris and, more specifically, the band’s resident Nintendo enthusiast Wata. Even after our extended exchange, it felt like the conversation was far from over.
Fast forward to November 2025 and the band was fresh off the release of third album Fleshwork, giving us the perfect excuse to pick up where we left off. LP3 saw the group take a more raw, bludgeoning approach to their formula as well as the debut of new bassist Luke Booth. But what of their interest in gaming? Was the connection to interactive media still present in the Pupil Slicer universe? You know where you are. The U.K. shredders are happy to return to the neon-lit Kill Feed arcade to discuss this album’s lyrical influences, games as an escape from a cruel world, what soundtrack they would have loved to contribute to and so much more. Watch the interview below so you can be ready for where the discussion picks up in 2027.
Fleshwork is out now via Prosthetic Records and can be purchased here.
