With a moniker like Megaton Sword, the implication is this is a very, very stupendously heavy outfit. Like unimaginably heavy. (As an aside, who or what might actually wield such a weapon?) Anyway, that’s not necessarily so. This Swedish quintet’s name speaks more to a penchant for old-school, fantasy-inspired proto-metal from the late ’70s and early ’80s, where megaton swords were wielded by fantastic creatures from far off galaxies to, like, destroy entire planets and whatnot.
So, of course their album is called Might & Power, and let us assure you that it delivers all it promises. Megaton Sword’s second full-length has the requisite riffs, confident clean vocals and mix of hard and soft material—with plenty of hooks—that’ll scratch that trad metal itch. These guys—Uzzy Unchained (vocals), Chris the Axe (guitars), Simon the Sorcerer (bass), Dan Thundersteel (drums), Seth Angel (guitars)—follow the Dust-covered Manilla Road to Cirith Ungol where they relieve themselves of their Heavy Load. This eight-track epic will be available on vinyl, CD, cassette and digitally on February 24 via Dying Victims Productions. Place your preorder here.
Here’s what the band had to say about their latest album:
“Hail to thee, legions of Decibel magazine! Brimful of steel, we’re back to present to ye, the Might & Power of Niralet with our second full length assault. Still dwelling in the true-as-steel territory of heavy metal, our hymns burst from the speaker in an even more varied manner, introducing subtle pianos, as well as raging blast beats, while Uzzy Unchained continues to spin the lore of Niralet and the planet Xarkahar to new depths. Topped off with a beautifully vile piece of art by the one and only Paolo Girardi, we can proudly serve yet another epic metal feast to our brothers and sisters all over the globe.
We shall see you on the road soon!”
