For Those About Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Voivod and Black Anvil

What’s up? It’s your old boy Waldo here, to inform you about some new and upcoming releases—good, bad or otherwise. Remember, I’m not an elitist, you just have terrible taste.

Masters of technological thrash, Voivod are releasing the largely unnecessary Ultraman EP. Now, don’t get me wrong, this birdbrain loves Voivod. The problem here, is this is for hardcore fans of Voivod and hardcore fans of the Japanese action show, Ultraman. If it’s not obvious, this EP covers themes from the show, along with two live tracks that seem to be just tacked on for legitimacy. Recorded during the Synchro Anarchy sessions and sung in original Japanese, one really wonders what the intent is here. Voivod is known for the strange, and this is no exception. For beaking superfans only. Hard to rate this one as it’s performed well. 5 Fucking Pecks.

Scene veterans Black Anvil are releasing their fifth full length Regenisis next month on Season of Mist. The long-delayed follow up to 2017’s As Was, this is a meaner, more stripped down version of the New Yorkers’ distinctive brand of black metal. Sure, Regenisis doesn’t stray too far from the typical black metal formula, not dabbling in psychedelics, or other influences on the genre. Instead, this is a progression from past records. Moody intros, screeched vocals and blast beats abound here. This is a solid effort. So, 6 Fucking Pecks.

Waldo out!
