For Those About Squawk: Waldo Pecks on KEN mode and Autopsy

What’s up? It’s your old boy Waldo here, to inform you about some new and upcoming releases, good, bad, or otherwise. Remember, I’m not an elitist, you just have bad taste.

One of the most underrated bands in the underground music scene, KEN mode (Kill Everyone Now Mode), is releasing their eight LP Null. This record sees the edition of multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Kerr. The first thing that stands out here is the additional noises/layers that Kerr provides. This is different for sure, with a heavy Swans/Einsturzende Neubauten pound along tracks that harken back to more pecked up hardcore (think Deadguy, Today Is the Day.) That’s not to say that this is some rip off of other bands—it certainly sounds like KEN mode. Frontman Jesse Matthewson says, “We tried to experiment more with our sound than we ever have before. We felt like there was really no reason to do anything at all unless we were trying to push this into something new.” Recorded and mixed by Andrew Schneinder, this is indeed a pummeling affair, but no matter how it sounds, this is nothing compared to seeing this band live. Simply put, they slay. 8 Fucking Pecks.

God (or Satan) damned do I love Autopsy, and here they are, in 2022 putting out another new record Morbidity Triumphant. If you are an extreme metal fan and don’t know Autopsy by now, wake the f up. This is  filthy, crusty, dirty, and all of the disgusting words used to describe Autopsy’s music. Most of the regular cast of characteristics are here: fast riffs, blast beats, screamed vocals, psycho leads, and of course the death/doom riffs that Autopsy perfected over 30 years ago. Production wise, the sound is raw, organic and raw. Did I mention this was raw? I really dig this. 8 Fucking Pecks.

Waldo out!
