Album Premiere: Brilliant Coldness – ‘The Ultimate Dream. Plan B: Disposal Of Humanity’

Brilliant Coldness album cover

The frozen roots of Brilliant Coldness began in November 1997 when Oleksandr “Mor” Umurzakov and Serhii “Angel” Udovenko first performed in Casket & Morgue. But the Ukrainian band soon realized they were drawn to lyrically exploring more philosophical themes. Once the band embraced the Brilliant Coldness name, Angel’s guitars became even more complex and daring. The band still showed love for Floridian old school metal. But now it seems more akin to Atheist than any rotten death metal like Obituary or Morbid Angel. That evolution continues on The Ultimate Dream. Plan B: Disposal Of Humanity.

The first part of “The Ultimate Dream” features the main components of what makes this album such an engaging listen. The twin guitars somehow disorient the listener while also entrancing them. Mor’s bass clangs and occasionally brawls for the spotlight, like in personal-favorite track “Technogenic Illusion.” Brilliant Coldness are masters of barely-controlled chaos. The second part of “The Ultimate Dream” suitably closes the record, and it’s a finale that fulfills the promise of all the dizzying disarray. After the band clicks into a deathrash groove, the song soon mutates into calm, clean leads. At over an hour, the music is demanding of attention. But the album earns the audiences focus with boundless energy and guitars that restlessly explore dimensions of sound.

“This material is something new in extreme music,” the band shared in a statement. “Imagine Niccolò Paganini playing extreme metal; that’s what it’s all about! We call it Academic Death Metal. This music played at the limit of physical abilities. It’s a powerful energetic flow of minds and feelings; a journey to the world of magic and wizardry of the human mind’s endless abilities!”
